In America Flags: Washington DC
October 2021 - I took a ride to DC this weekend specifically to see Suzanne Firstenberg’s ‘In America’ installation. I originally intended to simply view and photograph the project, not expecting to connect much to the deeper meaning behind it. As I watched my mother fill out a memorial flag for her friend (image 3) with her hand shaking and eyes welling with tears, I found that deeper connection. I was no longer looking simply at white flags planted on this site, I was seeing people - each with a story, a life, a legacy. It is a truly beautiful and powerful memorial.
